'Albatross Landing' (mollymawk) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

The Salvin’s albatross (mollymawk) is endemic to New Zealand and has a “nationally critical” conservation status. They are typically found around the Cook Straight during breeding season from August to April, before migrating all the way to Peru and Chile for the remainder of the year. The reference photo for this artwork was taken by Janice McKenna in the Cook Strait on an OSNZ Wellington Pelagic Trip.

Albatross eat mainly fish and krill, but also offal that is discarded from fishing boats, so unfortunately they get caught up in nets and can be injured or drowned. In 1998-2004 Salvin’s were recorded as the second most common species of albatross to die this tragic death. Forest and Bird highlighted this in their 2018 “Zero Bycatch” campaign, to spread awareness and encourage industry reform, to reduce or eliminate the problem. In 2020 the NZ government launched the National Plan of Action for Seabirds to drive change to fishing practises, implement new technology and monitor its success. This is important because NZ has more endemic breeding species of seabirds than any other country in the world, and 90% are currently nationally threatened or risk of extinction.
