NZ falcons are stunning birds, and sadly our most endangered bird of prey (‘threatened’ conservation status). There is only one species, with three subspecies - the largest being eastern falcon, followed by southern falcon, and then bush falcon.

This artwork is of ‘Ribbon’, an eastern falcon at Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust. She was named after the native ribbonwood tree, as it is the logo of her sponsors, Treeline Nursery. Wingspan is located in Rotorua and helps our native birds of prey, through breeding programs, rehabilitation of injured birds, education and advocacy, and is open to the public to experience the beauty of these raptors close up. Ribbon was captive-bred at Wingspan in 2018 from two rescued injured birds from Otago. The diet of a NZ falcon mainly consists of small birds, however they also hunt introduced predators too; one day Ribbon even caught a weasel during a flying display, much to the delight of the crowd.

Her trainer is Noel Hyde - a falconer of over 40 years - who finds everything about NZ falcons spectacular – their look, aerial prowess, speed, boldness, uniqueness, how they take prey, and the fact they’re fiercely independent, yet have a tractable nature, allowing you a close, trusting, hunting, relationship.

Limited edition fine art giclée print produced in New Zealand using the highest quality archival paper, inks and processes. Each print is hand signed and numbered by Hannah.
