'Fiordland Treasure' (rare leucistic South Island tomtit/miromiro) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

Deep in New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, up a long winding track from the ‘Wet Jacket Arm’ fiord - through mossy undergrowth, and tall, twisting beech trees - lives a very special tomtit. Hannah’s hiking party with Heritage Expeditions however, were tramping to ‘Moose Lake’ and actually on the lookout for an elusive Fiordland moose! Way back in 1910, tourism minister Thomas Donne released 10 moose into Fiordland, to establish game for hunting. They were last photographed in 1952, however evidence and sightings persist to this day. Due to the extreme remoteness of parts of Fiordland, it’s believed that there could still be a moose population living out of sight of people. Far more exciting for Hannah however, was the sighting of an incredibly rare, leucistic tomtit! Spotted in a tree in the distance, Hannah quickly pointed her camera and zoomed in to get some photos, and in less time than it takes to remember how to spell ‘leucistic’, it disappeared back into the mysterious misty mountainside. Leucism in birds is a genetic mutation that results in a total or partial reduction of colour in their feathers, and this beautiful example has spotty colouring on its head, back and wings.
