'Kākā Revival' limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

‘Kākā Revival’ celebrates the growing population of kākā, which has gone from a conservation status of “threatened”, to “at risk - recovering”. The artwork is based on a photograph taken by Hannah at Zealandia Ecosanctuary - her favourite bird watching location in Wellington. Kākā are smart, charismatic parrots, which also enjoy getting up to mischief. They are a pollinator for many native NZ plants, so are a key part of our forest ecosystem. Small numbers were introduced into Zealandia in 2002 after almost a century of being missing from the Wellington region. They are particularly vulnerable to stoats, as the females are preyed upon while nesting, and is why kākā will only typically be found on or near predator-free islands and ecosanctuaries. Possums and rats are also predators for young fledglings and they also compete for food as well. Thanks to all the hard work from Zealandia staff and volunteers, kākā are now flourishing in Wellington city and beyond. By the end of the 2018/19 breeding season, over 1,000 kākā had been banded by the very successful breeding program. They are now both breeding within and outside of Zealandia; their population is also now a source for translocations to other sanctuaries.
