'Kingfishers at dusk' (kōtare) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

‘Kingfishers at Dusk’ is an artwork of a pair of sacred kingfishers quietly sitting on a piece of driftwood in the early evening. They watch over the waters of the Waimanu Lagoon in search of crabs and small fish to feed on. This artwork was composed from three separate images; two individual kingfisher photos were referenced with permission by photographer Roger Brent Smith, and an image Hannah captured at the lagoon of the perfect piece of driftwood for a perch. Roger is an award-winning Kāpiti-based nature photographer whose images appear regularly in local and regional media. He has a strong interest in protecting and contributing to NZ’s natural heritage, and is a member and volunteer at Zealandia, Waikanae Estuary Care Group and Ngā Manu Nature Reserve. The Waikanae Estuary Care Group is an integral part of helping restore the area around Waimanu Lagoon on the Kāpiti Coast where these birds were photographed. They are a dedicated team who carry out pest control in the area, and have so far planted a very impressive 117,115 plants! There are 8 subspecies of sacred kingfishers, and the NZ native variant (kōtare) adult can be identified by a white collar.
