'Majestic Mr Tūī' limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

The tūī is an iconic native honeyeater, widespread throughout New Zealand. It is known for its boisterous behaviour, beautiful bird song, and its iridescent feathers. Tūī are unique in that they have two voice boxes, so can produce an incredibly varied range of sounds, including also being able to mimic other birds, other sounds (like car alarms), and even human voices too (see ‘Woof Woof the talking tūī’ on YouTube!).

Hannah photographed this tūī at Zealandia - one of her favourite bird watching spots, and one where she first started her bird photography. Zealandia is an amazing 225 hectare sanctuary in Wellington, and was a world’s first in being a fully predator-proof fenced mainland ecosanctuary. With the amazing predator control efforts at Zealandia and throughout the region, tūī went from a tiny remnant population in the 1990s, to now being found all over Wellington City and beyond.

This artwork is being used to support Forest and Bird’s centennial celebration. Tūī are held very dearly in Forest and Bird’s history; the tūī was used in their first logo when they established in 1923 and for many decades. Hannah regularly supports Forest and Bird, as they share a common goal of taking care of our native birds.
