'Manaaki Kākā' limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

‘Manaaki Kākā’ is an artwork of a pair of very snuggly young kākā photographed by Judi Lapsley Miller in an urban garden just outside Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington. The pair are drawn on a native NZ fuchsia (kōtukutuku) which Hannah photographed at Zealandia, and is a tree the kākā enjoy feeding on. ‘Manaaki Kākā’ translates to “take care of/sustain and protect” kākā, and was chosen because Judi and her husband Linton have been volunteering at Zealandia Ecosanctuary for the past 17 years, with 10 of those including being kākā handlers. With kākā, Judi started as a feeder, then doing monthly surveys, nest box monitoring, and taking on more of the record-keeping and breeding statistics, and together with Linton they have banded hundreds of kākā chicks. Judi is a conservationist, avid bird photographer, and uses her art and photography for wildlife advocacy and fundraising. Her gorgeous reference photo for this artwork is of a pair of young kākā she monitored in the nest and watched grow up. ‘Manaaki’ also reflects the hard work many others are doing to take care of and protect our beloved kākā throughout New Zealand.
