'Rays of Sunlight' (stitchbird/hihi) limited edition print
'Rays of Sunlight' (stitchbird/hihi) limited edition print
This artwork is a female (top) and male (bottom) pair of stitchbird (hihi) sitting in one of their favourite trees - the karamū. The Māori name hihi translates to ‘ray of sun’, referring to the bright yellow chest of the male bird. Hannah referenced photos she took at Zealandia Ecosanctuary (Wellington) on the ‘Round the Lake Track’. They love to hang out by the supplementary feeders, and there is a seat perfectly positioned to quietly observe them. Like the saddleback, they became extinct on the mainland with the introduction of predators and were confined to a single population; for the hihi it was on Little Barrier Island. Located north of Auckland, it was New Zealand's first nature reserve, and is now a pest-free island sanctuary protecting around 40 species of rare or endangered birds, 14 reptile and 2 bat species, and more than 400 native plants. Hihi have now been translocated to 8 sites across NZ. They were introduced to Zealandia in 2005, after not being on the mainland for at least 120 years, and is one of the sanctuary’s biggest success stories. Supplementary nest boxes in the valley and banding the chicks help to carefully monitor their future success.
