'Sailing Sooty' (light-mantled sooty albatross/toroa pango) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

The light-mantled sooty albatross (toroa pango) is an elegant NZ native seabird, with its distinctive sooty face, long graceful wings, and white, crescent-shaped eye highlight. This artwork was inspired by Hannah’s voyage with Heritage Expeditions to the Subantarctic Islands, where she was lucky to see some nesting on Campbell Island. They are a lesser-known and lesser-studied species, as their circumpolar breeding distribution means they are unlikely to be seen near the NZ mainland. They usually nest alone in hard to reach locations like cliff edges, which aren’t easily accessible for monitoring. Their main diet is squid and fish, however their foraging strategy is different to other albatross; they aren’t attracted to ships and fishing vessels, so we are less likely to see them at sea, and they also go much further south toward Antarctica too. One really interesting characteristic is they have a complex and beautiful courtship behaviour, that includes a paired, synchronised flight, which is like an aerial dance.

The reference photograph for this artwork was taken by Aaron Russ (Heritage Expeditions) on the cliffs of Enderby Island. Aaron has been travelling to the Subantarctics for 33 years, and has an immense passion, knowledge and dedication to conservation.
