'Take Flight' (pīwakawaka/fantail) limited edition print

from NZ$140.00

Fantails (pīwakawaka) are a gorgeous little bird that Hannah loves to draw. Fantails are widespread throughout NZ, making them one of our most well-known birds. They are fast, small and inquisitive, often flying close to people, making them a fun bird to photograph. Hannah started learning photography in 2018, to take her own artwork reference photos. Capturing a fantail in flight has been one of her big goals, as due to their speed and quick direction changes, this can be quite difficult. Much time was spent at her local gardens and bush reserves, working toward getting the perfect images for this series. They were captured on a Lumix G9 camera with a 100-400mm lens, using the 6k pre-burst function.

Fantails are very agile and use their beautiful fanned tail to help them catch insects. They use three different techniques, with this artwork capturing the method called ‘hawking’. This is where a fantail sits on an open perch with good visibility, waiting for a swarm of insects, and quickly strikes, often catching multiple insects at a time. The other two types are called ‘flushing’ – where they use their tail to disturb insects in dense bush, and ‘feeding associations’ – where they follow other birds (or people) that disturb insects.
