‘Whisper’ was a well-known morepork/ruru (native NZ owl) based at Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre, that truly touched the hearts of many, all around the globe. Wingspan is located in Rotorua and helps our native birds of prey, through breeding programs, rehabilitation of injured birds, education and advocacy. This artwork is a special tribute to what an incredible bird she was – an advocate for her species, a foster mother to other ruru chicks, and a dear friend to the Wingspan team. She was brought into Wingspan by a forestry worker in 2007 as an egg, and was artificially incubated and hand-reared. She has provided a wealth of knowledge for studying the habits and behaviours of ruru. Sadly, Whisper passed away on the 9th of September 2020; she will be missed by many.

The original artwork was drawn in A2 size over July to September 2020, from a reference photograph Hannah took when she met Whisper in 2019. One of Hannah’s primary goals as an artist is to raise awareness and funds for conservation organisations doing great things, so she was so proud to be able to donate $1,929 to Wingspan from her initial Whisper print sales.
